Do You Search for Alternate Job Titles When you look for job postings, do you look for alternate (or what Ive referred to as adjacent) job titles? Its not hard for an employer to put alternate titles into a job posting but Im guessing they dont because (a) they havent thought of it, or (b) they are worried about the implications of someone applying to a job and wanting one of the alternate titles.  Who knows. Heres what I do know: when you go a little beyond the titles you think you want, you just might learn about titles that you didnt know about.  That was the case for me, 10 years ago, when I searched for project manager jobs, and I came across the perfect title for me: product manager.  I honestly had never heard of it before, even though I was already doing product manager tasks. Expand your search a bit and be open to other titles. Your Job Search “Campaign” Part Two It’s election time here in Jacksonville; our local mayoral and city council races are in full swing.   It strikes me that your job search is a little like a race.   Maybe there’s something you can learn from a well-run campaign. First, a well-run campaign seeks out the best advice it can get.   Candidates get help with organizing, messaging, and reaching out to voters and donors.   The best candidates also talk to experts on issues and get candid feedback on their appearance and speaking skills.   They seek out good advice and are smart enough to take it.   Takeaway for jobseekers: develop a diverse group of advisors who can give you the best information on your industry and how to succeed.
