Make the Right Hiring Decisions for your Small Business

Make the Right Hiring Decisions for your Small BusinessMake the Right Hiring Decisions for your Small BusinessMake the Right Hiring Decisions for your Small Business ChildersYour small geschftlicher umgang may be growing by leaps and bounds. As you decide to add to your existing workforce, employment experts say its important to take steps to ensure you recruit and hire the right candidates.Small geschftliches miteinanderes need to be strategic when recruiting new hiresin order to avoid hiring pitfalls that can cost them time and money, says Mary Anne Kennedy, a human resources expert from Millstone Township, New Jersey, and author of Finding the Right Job A Step-by-Step Approach.I encourage small business owners to build a job descriptionaround the work that needs to be accomplished, and then look for candidates who offer that specific skillset.Since hiring employees you dont need can cripple a small business, consider the following before you post that job descriptionConsiderTiming . If you find your business is missing growth opportunities because you and your employees are short-staffed or you cant keep up with customer needs, it may be time to hire. While a good manager knows when to pitch in, that doesnt mean doing the work of three people. After building a job description, small businesses should set the standards and expectations for the job, Kennedy says. Note what the specific tasks are, whats required to perform them and how the employees performance will be measured.Assess Workflows. Before hiring new employees, Margaret Jacoby, SPHR, president and principal consultant, MJ Management Solutions, Mesa, Arizona, also advises small business owners to assess their current workflow, and then to hire strategically. All too often a small business owner will feel as though they are overwhelmed and need to hire someone immediately, Jacoby says. Theres nothing worse than to hire someone for a poorly defined role. Before hiring, Jacoby recommends assessing your com panys on-going business needs and what help you would require if your company suddenly experienced a growth spurt. Ask yourself what tasks could be taken on by existing staff, as well as areas where youd require additional assistance. Also, assess the stability of your business, customer base and budget, to determine if your company could retain new hires in the event of an economic downturn.Consider Outsourcing. Kennedy says filling a position isnt just about whom you hire, but how you structure the position. Outsourcing is often a good alternative to hiring a full-time staff member if you only occasionally need assistance or are seeking someone to work on a specific project.Hiring contractors and freelancers also allows small businesses to save money since they arent paying healthcare and vacation expenses.Recruiting IT workers is one area where small businesses often outsource. Instead of allocating resources to implement and maintain new IT systems, outsourcing allows small busin esses to focus on critical aspects of their business such as their products and customers.Know When to Keep Jobs In-House. Many small business owners have learned the hard way that no one sells their business as well as they do. If you want to grow your companys sales base, consider whether sales is a job that you can take on yourself, and perhaps delegate some of your other tasks to another employee. If you do decide to hire an outside salesperson, Kennedy recommends hiring a candidate who is a hunter rather than a farmer.Farmers are content to maintain the status quo and to harvest existing customer business while hunters have a ferocious appetite and are aggressive about finding potential new customers and seeking out leads, Kennedy says.Identify Tasks to Help Grow Your Business. Jacoby advises small businesses to hire based on their future needs, rather than just their current needs. Where do you see your business in the next year, the next five years, and what kinds of employees do you need to reach those goals?

The True Harnessing of Steam

The True Harnessing of Steam The True Harnessing of Steam In April 27, 1865, the steamship Sultana welches chugging up the Mississippi with mora than 2,200 people on board. At 3 a.m., with the boat situated about seven miles north of Memphis, Tenn., three of the four boilers powering the craft exploded. The violent explosions caused a fire, and within 15 minutes the Sultana burned to the waterline. More than 1,500 people died. The cause of the explosion was never determined, and a nation far too preoccupied with post-Civil War reconstruction and rising industrialization cared little about a full-scale investigation. Since consistent operating guidelines and inspections for steam pressure systems were virtually nonexistent in this period of frenetic industrial activity and commercialism, many boilers in use were unsafe.Although it remains the worst maritime disaster in the nations history, the Sultana explosion was not an isolated incident in the United States. Boiler explosions occurr ed with alarming frequency in the 19th century, with 159 occurring in 1880 alone, the year that a small group of men assembled in New York City to found the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.Modest ObjectivesLegend has it that the group came together expressly to address the problem of unsafe boilers, but the initial objectives of ASME were modest. The founders were seeking a reliable system for technical information exchange as well as a social platzsetting.ASMEs founders were prominent machine builders and technical innovators. Erasmus Darwin Leavitt, Jr. invented more than 50 gears, pumps, and other mechanical components, and advanced the understanding of economic efficiency in pumping engines. Henry R. Worthington was another pump engine designer, who built the first duplex waterworks engine and went on to found the Worthington Pump Co. in New York City. Francis A. Pratt patented milling and gear-cutting machines and, together with Amos Whitney, created an engine manufact uring company that remains in geschftsleben today. Alexander Lyman Holley, the Societys first chairman, built steel plants from Chicago to Troy, N.Y., and came to be known as the father of American steel manufacturing.Holley and Robert Thurston, ASMEs first president, were the guiding lights of the fledgling organization. Beyond seeking an improved method of information exchange, Holley and Thurston were passionate in promoting mechanical engineering as a truly sophisticated body of scientific knowledge and as an engine for Americas industrial development.Boilers at the BaseAs ASME developed during the early 1880s, an increasing number of boilers were manufactured and installed to meet the needs of factory production and the fledging oil and steel industries. By 1890, there were some 100,000 boilers in service in the United States. While boiler systems proliferated and became indispensable to the rapidly industrializing nation, unfortunately, they were not much safer. The boilers wer e becoming increasingly larger and more complex, and in the absence of consistent operating guidelines many users cranked up the pressure ratings in an effort to produce additional work. The steam pressure rating for a prime mover in 1890 was typically set at 80 psi, compared to 30 psi in 1850.In ASMEs first decade, more than 2,000 boilers exploded. When a fire-tube boiler in a Brockton, Mass., shoe factory exploded on March 10, 1905killing 58 people and causing property damage in excess of $250,000a public outcry ensued. In those years, the U.S. government was reluctant to legislate rules and regulations for industry, so the job of standardization fell to the private sector and trade groups. Even before ASME was established in February 1880, the founders wrote papers outlining the symbiotic relationship between technical standards and a rational industrial order. The Societys founders discussed standards for screw threads, and pump and valve dimensions during the organizations first meeting and, by 1885, were considering uniform methods of testing boilers.Six months following the incident in 1906, ASME assembled a five-person Board of Boiler Rules, which drafted a brief document that was endorsed by the Massachusetts legislature. The rules specified pressure limits on boilers (cast-iron systems were limited to 25 psi) and included guidelines for the performance characteristics of plugs and rivets. In 1914, ASME produced the first edition of the Boiler Code, Rules for the Construction of Stationary Boilers and for Allowable Working Pressures. The formation of the code was no smooth process. Some engineers and company officials derided the code, complaining it was too regulatory or overly complicated. Some manufacturers of boilers were opposed to limitations on steam pressure. Several railroad managers who protested against the ASME effort sought a different set of inspection requirements than those established for stationary systems.A Philadelphia engineer involv ed in boiler manufacturing, John C. Parker, was vehement in his opposition to the code. In a letter to the Society in 1914, Parker expressed a strong protest against further backing of the propaganda for state control of boiler design, and went on to accuse ASME of devious and underhanded dealings and attempts to sabotage his company as well as others.Perfect TimingYet, for American industry, the timing of the Boiler Code was perfect. At the turn of the century, boilers of various sizes and performance capabilities were entering the marketplace, and mass production of boilers was in full swing. The publication of the first ASME Boiler Code in 1914 was a symbolic moment in the history of the Society, an event that would help define the organization and contribute to its stature and importance in the mechanical engineering community for decades to follow. While boiler systems proliferated and became indispensable to the rapidly industrializing nation, unfortunately, they were not much s afer.

How to Confront an Annoying Co-worker - The Muse

How to Confront an Annoying Co-worker - The MuseHow to Confront an Annoying Co-worker There are the co-workers who are constantly interrupting you in meetings. There are the ones who dont seem to pull their weight. And there are even the ones who bbrde their music or chew their gum at the loudest possible volume.Whatever their annoying habits, these co-workers obviously arent all that self-aware. After all, if they knew how much of a nuisance they were, they might actually be embarrassed and put an end to their obnoxious behaviors.Of course, youre not one to be blunt in these scenarios. Speaking up to a co-worker whos annoying or disruptive isnt just a courageous act- its a risk in itself. It can either go over well or backfire on you, or- in the case of someone whos not in tune with themselves- your feedback just doesnt stick. So how can you ensure your comment both resonates and is received positively by a not-so-self-aware colleague? Here are four rules to follow. 1. You Have to Be Super ClearSince this person is already way behind you in terms of awareness, you have to work extra hard to explain clearly what theyre doing.Look, this isnt always easy. But tiptoeing around the real problem only means that the person on the receiving end is either confused, misinformed, or insulted. So, before you chat with them, get really clear on what exactly theyre doing thats driving you nuts. Is it what theyre saying or how theyre saying it? Is it something they always do- or only in certain situations? And, is it a habit that they can correct, or is it something thats out of their hands?2. You Have to Give ContextPart of how humans best process information is context. Context makes things easier to remember. Can you remember what you wore last Thursday? Probably not. But if I asked you what you wore last Thursday when you were at a bar with your friends playing pool, you could probably easily recall what your outfit looked like. Also, context helps explain the why. When you tell someone why what theyre doing is bothering you, distracting you, or insulting you, it carries more weight. Sure, you can tell someone to stop talking so loudly around your desk. But, if you tell them that their volume is preventing you from finishing that important report due tomorrow, they may have more empathy and actually turn it down a notch.Give the person something to work with when delivering whatever feedback you have. When and where were they doing said habit? What was going on at the time? Why did it affect you in this specific way?3. You Have to Do it NicelyOne, because this person really isnt meaning to do what theyre doing. As author Julia Chang of LearnVest states, Most people want to vilify low-EQ co-workers, but dont fault them for skills they dont have.Be the bigger person and assume that your co-worker is truly well-intentioned and not deliberately trying to drive you up a wall. Two, because niceness always pays off in the end. You know how I said earlier that addressing a not-so-self-aware co-worker can backfire? Thats a lot more likely to happen if you do it in a condescending or rude way.Lets put these first three points together. For example, lets say your co-worker is a bit too chatty at the desks. You might approach it in the following wayHey David I was wondering if I could talk to you for a second. While I love chatting with you at our desks- I could literally spend hours talking about dog tweets like we did yesterday- Ive been really struggling to finish this article thats due Friday. I personally have a hard time not getting distracted by what everyones talking about around me, so I need to call in a small favor Whenever you want to chat with our team about non-work stuff, could you move to the kitchen or Slack, or pop by toward the end of the day? 4. You Have to Recognize Their Efforts and Hold Them AccountableIts possible the first time you say something it still wont resonate. If thats the case, a simple poke reminding them of your talk can work wonders Just wanted to remind you that Id appreciate it if you could keep the talking to a minimum at the desks or Thanks again for listening to my concerns about being interrupted in last weeks meeting. I think your idea was great and I hope we can both throw ideas out there without having to talk over each otherBut if theyve already made moves to improve, dont forget to acknowledge that. Change doesnt happen overnight- if that chronic interrupter only jumped in once or twice in your latest meeting as opposed to every time, thats a step in the right direction. Recognize that their effort makes a huge difference for you and isnt going unnoticed. Doing so strengthens your work relationship and encourages them to keep doing better. My final piece of advice is, if this person just isnt budging, you may want to bring in another player- your boss or HR, for example. Because its entirely possible to have a co-worker whos both oblivious and self-centered, having that e xtra backing gives you more authority to shut the person down. And I highly recommend checking out this article to help you approach a conversation with someone higher up.

10 Questions Employers Should Never Ask in an Interview

10 Questions Employers Should Never Ask in an Interview10 Questions Employers Should Never Ask in an InterviewConducting job interviews is a hard task. Most people dont conduct interviews all that often and so they dont get a lot of practice. Of course, if youre a recruiter, you should have refined skills, but for the hiring managers, most dont hire more than once or twice a year. So their skills are rusty- at best. While many articles focus on the interview questions you should ask, tzu siche are also questions that you should never ask. You dont ask some questions because of legal reasons and others because they arent helpful in selecting an employee. Here are ten questions that you should never ask. Some of them might surprise you. Oh I Went to South High School, Too. What Year Did You Graduate? High school graduation is a sticky question because it indicates your candidates age- give or take a year. Age discrimination for people over 40 is illegal, and the only age that you need t o know is if they are over 18 or 21, depending on the job. Most interviewers would never ask a candidate how old he or she is, but questions like this slip out, especially when the topic comes up in a normal conversation. When you find out that your candidate has something in common with you, its natural to try to build connections.Hold off on this connection, though, until after you have made a job offer. If you hire the person, you will have plenty of time to laugh about running laps in Mrs. Jones PE class. I Love Your Accent. Where Are You From? First of all, have you looked at the persons resume? That will give you an idea of where your candidatehas lived, but otherwise, national origin is a protected class. Lots of people love cool accents. You mean nothing discriminatory by the question. But, if you dont hire the person, they could look back on that question as national origin discrimination.Likewise, the saatkorn goes for an individual who looks like they arent from the United States. If their resume says their address is Pittsburgh, then as far as youre concerned, they come from Pittsburgh. How Many Kids Do You Have? This question often comes up in the small talk portion of the job interview or if you take your candidate out to lunch. The children subject is often brought up by the interviewee. Shell see a picture of your kids on your desk and comment, and the polite thing to do is to ask her the same question back.Except, in a job interview, you want to let that question go. The proper questions arerelated to the ability of your candidate to do the job. You can say, This job doesnt have good flexibility. Were pretty rigid about our hours. Will that work for you? You especially dont want to get into plans for future children,as pregnancy discrimination violates the law. Are You a US Citizen? The question you can ask regarding this issue is, Are you authorized to work in the United States? And the hiring manager shouldnt need to ask this question at all.Y our job application should ask this question, and the recruiter was responsible for weeding out candidates who cant legally work here. What Language Do You Speak at Home? This questionalso puts you into national origin discrimination territory. If youre hiring an employee for a position that requires multi-lingual capabilities, the question to ask is, What languages do you speak? And, for further clarification, How well do you speak that language? Ideally, you should have a current employee who speaks the language you are looking for tointerview the candidate and assess their language skills. Do You Have Any Disabilities? Some disabilities are obvious. If the person is in a wheelchair, youll know it. But, many disabilities that are protected under theAmericans With Disabilities Act arent obvious duringa job interview. Dont ask. Again, even though you would never intentionally discriminate against someone with a disability, once you know, you haveset yourself up for the accusation tha t you did.You can ask the candidate if they are capable of doing the job. If a candidate does have a disability that needs accommodation, the candidate should bring it up to you after youve made a job offer. What Would You Do if a Penguin With a Sombrero Walked in the Front Door? Some hiring managers like to ask these fun and creative questions they found on the internet. Please dont. Unless youre in the business of zoologischer garten animal fiestas, there is no answer to this question that will help you evaluate the candidate.Keep your questions relevant to the job. Dont try to pry into personality. Unless youre a trained psychologist, you wont even know how to interpret the candidates answers. Ask about knowledge, skills, and abilities instead. Do You Need Health Insurance? Yes, everyone needs health insurance. If youre asking because the job doesnt offer health insurance, and you want to make them aware, just say it flat out during the phone screen. This job doesnt offer health i nsurance. Are you still interested in interviewing?By waiting until the interview and asking your candidate if he needs health insurance, what youre doing is prying into their marital status, the employment status of their spouse, their health status, and their financial independence. Dont ask. What Did You Hate About Your Last Job? It can seem like a good question, as you can use it as a set up a situation in which you are extolling the virtues of the position youre offering. But, the question opens up the opportunity for your candidate to become very negative.Candidates dislike something about their current job, or they wouldnt be job searching. But, they are generally trying hard to stay positive. Instead, ask questions about what they are looking for in their new job. What are you looking for in your newjob? is a better, more positive question. What Church Do You Attend? Unless youre hiring for a faith-based organization, this question is a no-go. Again, it often comes up in sma ll talkand seems harmless, butyou cannot discriminate on the basis of religion unless its pertinent to the job. (So, yes, you can require that the minister for your Lutheran church is Lutheran, but you cant require that your grocery store cashier has the same beliefs as you.)The only time religion is relevant in a secular interview is if the person needs an accommodation, in which case it is their responsibility to bring it up after youve made an offer. Then, you can decide together if an accommodation is possible. When youre conducting job interviews, keep your focus on the actual job, and the skills you need the new employee to possess and you wont go wrong or off-track with your interview questions. These are ten examples of questions you dont want to ask and why you dont want to ask them. - - - - - - - - - - - - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance journalist specializing in Human Resources. How to Explain Gaps in Employment on a Job Application

How to Explain Gaps in Employment on a Job ApplicationHow to Explain Gaps in Employment on a Job ApplicationNot everyone is fortunate enough to have a work history where jobs fall sequentially with greater and greater responsibility and without gemeinsame agrarpolitiks between gigs. Those whose work history is a little rocky or spotty need to explain why as best they can on their job applications. A gap in employment history is not the albatross it was a few decades ago. Those in younger generations bounce from job to job more frequently, and some are comfortable with leaving one job without their next job lined up. While it is true, gaps in employment are not as bad as they once were, leaving them unexplained is an easy way to make one of the most common job application mistakes. Why You Might Have Gaps in Employment People can leave the workforce and come back later. Some parents choose to stay home with preschool children and then re-enter the workforce once the children spend their weekdays at school. Others leave to care for a parent. Once caregiving becomes too difficult, the caregiver may need professionals to take over which then allows the caregiver to return to employment. Furthermore, some leave the paid workforce to volunteer full-time. You could turn your volunteer job in a full-time position, but if you dont, these are just some of the common situations when people justifiably leave employment without having another job to occupy next. While there may be a perfectly legitimate reason for a given persons gap in employment, a hiring manager does not know the gap is legitimate unless an applicant explains so. A manager is left to assume the worst. Why else would an applicant omit an explanation of why they were out of work for six months? A year? Two years? The manager thinks that if there was a good reason for the gap, the applicant would explain. How to Explain a Gap in Employment History on a Job Application Unless the applicant pool is ve ry weak, a hiring manager will not bother digging deeper on an application that leaves out such critical information. The manager likely has dozens of other applications to sift through and cannot waste time trying to piece together an applicants work history when it should be documented clearly and concisely. Applicants should make their application materials as easy to read as possible. Hiring managers do not want to spend an inordinate amount of time on any one application, particularly when they are screening to see which applicants meet the extremum qualifications outlined in the job posting. Come prepared with answers if youve been fired. Obviously, not all gaps in employment are easy to explain away. Some gaps happen for bad reasons, including an applicants termination from a previous job for cause. You should prepare how you will answer the question of why you have been fired. It is better for the hiring manager to find out from you than from your previous employer. Explain what you learned. If the job application form allows for a detailed explanation, explain what happened and what you learned from the situation. This will show how you have grown from the unpleasant past experience and are unlikely to make the same mistakes again. As an example, an applicant who was fired in the past for repeatedly missing work without calling in sick could say they now take showing up seriously and always schedule planned leave two weeks ahead. This does not absolve the applicant from past behavior, and the termination may still compel the hiring manager to pass on the application, but the applicant takes the issue head-on which a hiring manager must respect. In some circumstances, an employment gap is not caused by an employees choice or poor performance. Employers sometimes go through reductions in force, and employees are the casualties. In some reductions in force, employees performance is not considered when decisions are made about who stays and who goes. Emp loyees get caught up in processes that are designed to be as fair as possible however, good employees lose their jobs along with the organizations dead wood. No matter whether your employment gaps are for good, bad or neutral reasons, always explain them. Leaving the gaps up to a hiring managers interpretation is always a mistake.

You also dont want a worried new employee to wonder about whether you are actually expecting them to show up. The following letter is warm and encouraging, yet, it states goals and expectations that the manager has for the new employee. It sets up the expectation that employees work hard, make decisions, and are not micromanaged. It ensures the new employee that she will have help and helfende hand from coworkers as she starts her new job. The goal is to provide information, without overwhelming her, prior to the start day. Sample Welcome Letter for a New Employee This is a sample informal letter from the persons new manager. Use it as an example when you craft your own welcome letters to send to your new employees. Make sure that you are honest so that what the new employee experiences on star ting is congruent with what you tell her in the welcome letter. Dear Margaret, The selection team was excited to hear that you had accepted our job offer. So, I wanted to share some information about our department and yourteam prior to your start date. It will be great when you walk into the department on May 21 at 9 a.m. if you know what you are walking into. My management style empowers employees to make the decisions about how they do their jobs within the framework of the departments objectives. Our goals flow from the executive planning process here at Smith-Thompson. The process receives our input as I sit on the executive team and help develop our overall strategic direction. You can take a look at the departments current objectives. I have arranged access for you at (url of objectives on the companys internal website). Take a look at the objectives and youll find where your new job fits into our departments strategy. If you have questions, just email me. Youre joining a gre at team of coworkers. Several have been with the company for over twenty years and several have joined the team in the past five years. So, we have a good range of content and product information, historical data, and fresh viewpoints that make working together a rich experience. Everyone on the team works really hard and they dont countenance slackers. You impressed them in the interviews with your energy, enthusiasm and your track record of working hard and smart. I do manage by walking around and, as you saw on your tour, we believe that decision making is enhanced and speeded up when coworkers work in a relatively open area. You saw your workspace on your tour, so know what to expect when you get here. Everyone is cheering for your success. You wont lack for help when you start work. In addition to spending time with me, Magdalena has volunteered to be your mentor, a role we take seriously at Smith-Thompson. You met Magdalena during your second interview, I believe. Both Magdale na and I have set up our schedules so that we are in the amtsstube for your first few days, but you are welcome to ask anyone about anything in your new company. Theyre all committed to welcoming you and helping you integrate successfully into the team. Your initial training will come from Kate whom you also met during both the first and second round of interviews. She is our most experienced person in the role that you are joining us to do. What she knows about our clients and customers is exactly what youll need to know to succeed. Our HR staff thought that you might like to read about our benefits and policies before you were buried in the new job. Heres the link to the table of contents of our employee handbook. (Insert link.) You can read at your leisure and contact Elizabeth in HR or me with any questions or concerns. As you come onboard, I want to emphasize that our deepest commitment is to our customers. Cloud-Building

Cloud-Building Cloud-Building When it comes to careers in the IT industry, jobs tend to specialize into five different categories: Applications Servers Network Storage Security There are very few individuals who can claim expertise in all five categories. There is simply too much to learn. A new type of IT career is emerging that is directly related to the phenomena of cloud computing: the virtual data center (VDC) architect. A VDC architect has the skills to design data centers that support virtualized applications, placing them into cloud-like infrastructures. Designing a virtualized data center is dramatically different from designing a physical data center. It is a skill, however, that can be learned. It does not require deep and in-depth knowledge of all five categories. It does require, however, strong inter-personal and collaboration skills with the experts in those areas. Many IT organizations do not have a VDC architect. These organizations can choose to either (a) promote one of their own, or (b) hire a new employee or consultant. EMC has created a training course and certification process for VDC architects that can serve homegrown IT specialists or hired consultants. The course instructs the trainee on fundamental VDC attributes (including an overview of all of the five categories mentioned above). In addition, the course lays the foundation for advancing to a higher level of certification (cloud architect). More information on the VDC architecture certification can be found here. I attended one of the earliest versions of the course, and for your reference I’ve attached a video below that gives a high-level overview of the course. IT specialists should consider VDC certification as a solid career strategy that takes advantage of the cloud computing trend.   Steve http://stevetodd.typepad.com Twitter: @SteveTodd EMC Intrapreneur

Dream job alert Spend the summer in the Italian countryside

Dream job alert Spend the summer in the Italian countryside Dream job alert Spend the summer in the Italian countryside Ever heard of Grottole? Well, it’s a village in Italy’s southern countryside, it’s beautiful, and you could live and volunteer there for the summer as part of Airbnb’s  Italian Sabbatical Program â€" all expenses paid.Four people will volunteer for a nonprofit called “Wonder Grottole” and spend the summer working to revive the historic town center.   Grottole has 300 inhabitants and 600 empty homes, which is one reason why Airbnb might be so interested in the town.Besides work, you’ll have a morning Italian class, learn how to grow vegetables, get cooking lessons from the locals, and visit wine cellars and ruins. This village improvement effort makes economic sense for Airbnb. Airbnb has restored buildings in Italian villages before as part of a larger effort to create more space for guests in villages, where housing is often run-down or crumbling. In 2017, Airbnb noted that  Airbnb bookings in villages were 42% higher than in cities. That year, Airbnb worked with other organizations to restore artists’ residences in the Italian village of Civita  di Bagnoregio as a way to create more places for people to stay.Airbnb’s interest in Grottole is also a move that is good for their image, after facing years of criticism about destabilizing the economy of many European cities like Barcelona and Amsterdam, some of which have moved to limit the effect of the house-sharing giant. The rules and how to applyThe deadline is 11:59 Central European Time on February 17th. After that, 30 finalists will be chosen for video interviews. Another found of finalists will be chosen by March 29th, and from that batch, the final four volunteers who will live in Grottole will be selected. The residency dates are June 1st-August 30th.  Airbnb will cover each volunteer’s travel expenses, plus up to 900 euros a month for other expenses. Volunteers will stay in an Airbnb-run home in the center of town.To qualify for this dream job, you must be 18 years old with a valid pass port, and a resident of one of these countries: the United States, Argentina  (except for the province of Mendoza), Australia, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, France, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom.

Write a LinkedIn Recommendation for Your Boss - The Muse

Write a LinkedIn Recommendation for Your Boss - The Muse Write a LinkedIn Recommendation for Your Boss Experts agree: To be an effective networker, don’t think about what other people can do for you. Instead, focus on how you can provide value to them. You’ll build stronger relationships, which will make your connections genuinely eager to do you favors- which means, in the end, you’ll come out ahead. Here’s the problem. If you’re young, relatively inexperienced, in a new industry, or without many connections, you don’t have a ton of obvious opportunities to help others out. Luckily, I recently hit on an awesome way to give people a boost that’s perfect for any professional without much networking currency (or any professional, really.) I’ve been writing LinkedIn recommendations- not for the people who work for me, but for the people above me. The Why Usually our superiors write us recommendations, not the other way around. But recommendations on LinkedIn are different than the ones you might send in with a job application. On LinkedIn, it’s completely acceptable to have someone lower in the ranks recommending a higher-up. It’s actually very helpful for the person being recommended, because it creates a holistic view of his or her work ethic, leadership style, skills, and so forth. Writing a recommendation for your boss also gives you a chance to thank him or her. We don’t usually get the opportunity to give spontaneous thank-yous to our higher-ups, and this is the perfect non-awkward way to show your appreciation. Lastly, it increases your visibility. Suppose someone in your industry is browsing your manager’s page. He reads your (well-written) recommendation and ends up clicking on your profile. Now you’re on his radar, too. The Who Whomever you directly report to is an obvious choice. However, you can also recommend your boss’s boss, the head of your department, the head of a different department- even the CEO. As long as you’ve worked closely enough with this person to give an accurate and detailed portrayal of his or her strengths, qualifications, and standards, you’re qualified to give a recommendation. Suppose you’re wondering whether you should recommend Adam, who’s several rungs above you on the company ladder. If your interactions are limited to a couple emails, conversation at office parties, and mutual attendance of some meetings, you’re probably not close enough. However, if you’re worked under him for a project, received training from him, or helped him put together a report, he’d be a great choice. The How I want all my recommendations to be honest, thoughtful, and detailed, so before I ever sit down to draft one, I’ll take a week’s worth of notes. Basically, instead of just thinking, “Oh, that was nice,” when my boss (or whomever I’m recommending) does something that makes me grateful, I’ll write it down. After seven days is up, I’ll review my notes. (If it’s someone I work with less frequently, I’ll extend this process to two weeks or even a month.) Here’s a sample list: Monday: Offered to teach me how to use new software. Tuesday: Thanked me for my hard work; answered all my emails quickly. Wednesday: Helped me set up a meeting so I could learn more about other departments. Thursday: Was understanding when I was late to our check-in and even stayed later so she could finish explaining something. Friday: Asked me if I still wanted to learn how to use new software. By doing this, some trends usually leap out. Based on this list, I’d characterize my boss as supportive, invested in my success, and good at communicating. Plus, now I have both specific traits to highlight and examples to back up my claims. For example, I could write: Dylan is clearly interested in helping me grow as an employee. When our company started using a new leads-tracking software, she asked me if I’d like her to show me how to use it (on her own time!) because she knew I wanted to learn more about the sales side of the company. She also offered to arrange a meeting with some of the key members of the sales and marketing teams so I could get more insight into their structure and goals. Whenever I have questions or concerns, Dylan responds right away- and even follows up later in the week or month to make sure my issues have been resolved. Her patience and willingness to help have made me motivated to do the best job I can. This is also a great opportunity to subtly reinforce someone’s best traits. If you praise your manager’s excellent listening qualities, chances are, he’s going to be super attentive next time you come in with a project idea. If you thank the CEO of the company for her commitment to transparency, those all-staff meetings aren’t going away any time soon. Just make sure you’re being honest- you don’t want to write anything that will make the person think, “What? I don’t do that.” (For more tips, check out our five-minute guide to writing amazing recommendations- we’ve even included some sample lines.) The Rest After I’ve crafted a really solid paragraph or two, I’m usually eager to put it up on LinkedIn. However, I always check with the recommendee first. Some people are pretty picky about what goes on their page, and you don’t want your nice gesture to become a faux pas. Here’s how I ask for the green light: Dear Dylan, I really enjoy working with you, and I want to show my appreciation with a LinkedIn recommendation. My first draft is below. Is there anything I should take out or add? I’m happy to make any changes you’d like. Also, please don’t feel obligated to accept this recommendation- I’d understand if you were trying to limit what goes on your profile! In any case, thank you for being such a great supervisor. Best, Aja It may seem funny to request permission to give a recommendation, but doing so gives people the option of tailoring your recommendation to fit their personal brand- and an easy out if they don’t want your recommendation at all. (It’s never happened to me, but people always say they appreciate being asked.) Once you’ve gotten the go-ahead or some edits, you’re ready to upload! I’ve used this technique to do something useful for people with much more power, responsibility, and visibility than me. Will you try it? Let me know on Twitter! Working out is great, but doing it this way might make you live longer

Working out is great, but doing it this way might make you live longer Working out is great, but doing it this way might make you live longer There are different theories that lead to a healthier and longer life, but a new study claims that speeding up your exercise routine is the secret to helping you live longer than the rest.A test conducted by Brazilian scientists, via Medical News Today,   suggests that muscle power helps keep your body in better shape than just regular muscle strength. When they tested nearly 4,000 non-athletes, they found that people with maximal muscle power over the median had higher survival rates.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The studyProfessor Claudio Gil Araújo, who leads a Brazilian exercise clinic, CLINIMEX, tested 3,878 non-athletes between ages 41-85 years over a 15-year period using one exercise: the upright row. The age group was selected based on muscle power decreasing after age 40. The clinic selected the highest total after three attempts with increased weight.Scientists followed up with participants nearly seven years after their trials, where they concluded that those with muscle power higher than the median had higher survival rates, while those below had a better chance of dying.Participants who had ranked below the midpoint had a risk of dying 10 to 13 times higher.“For optimal power training results, you should go beyond typical strength training and add speed to your weight lifts,” Araújo said.To focus on power in your regiment, perform 1-to-3 sets for about 6-to-8 repetitions doing movements as quickly as possible. How to Start a Letter With Professional Greeting Examples

How to Start a Letter With Professional Greeting Examples How to Start a Letter With Professional Greeting Examples Whats the best way to start a letter? When writing a letter for professional purposes, an appropriate greeting is extremely important. Your greeting sets the tone for your letter or email message, and is an indicator of your written  communication skills. The Best Ways to Start a Letter When deciding  which salutation to use, you should consider if you know the person, and how well. If you are writing to someone in a professional capacity that you have known personally for many years, it is appropriate to use only their first name. Otherwise, it is best to use  Mr., Ms., or Dr  as an  appropriate business letter salutation. If you have any doubts about which salutation you should use, err on the side of caution and use the more formal style of address. Try not to be tempted to begin your professional letter with informal salutations like “Hello,” “Greetings,” “Hi There,” or “Good Morning” if you don’t know the name of your contact person. While those informal styles of greeting are fine for casual emails to friends or even for more formal emails you might send out to groups of people, in a professional letter you’ll need to use a personal salutation, one with either a first and/or last name (“Dear Mr. Doe”) or a job title (“Dear Hiring Manager”). Always make sure to double-check the spelling of the letter recipients name. Otherwise, youll be making a poor impression from the start of your letter. As well, dont neglect to include the period after Mr. and Ms. Follow your salutation with a colon (e.g., Dear Ms. Doe:).     Examples of Professional  Letter Greetings These greetings are all suitable for professional communications. Dear Firstname Lastname; e.g., Dear John DoeDear Mr./Ms. Lastname; e.g., Dear Mr. Doe or Dear Ms. DoeDear Mr./Ms. Firstname Lastname; e.g., Dear Mr. John Doe or Dear Ms. Jane DoeDear Hiring ManagerDear Sir or MadamTo Whom It May ConcernDear Human Resources ManagerDear Company Name Recruiter; e.g., Dear ABC Company Recruiter Greetings to Avoid The following greeting arent appropriate for formal letters or email messages. Good DayGood Morning or Afternoon (you dont know when theyll receive the letter or email message)GreetingsHiHi ThereHeyHey There Try to Find a Contact Person If at all possible, use a contact name when you write. This makes your letter more personal, and it creates an immediate relationship with the reader. If you don’t have a contact name, you can do some research to try to find out the  right person to address your letter to. Sometimes the name will be on the company website, or you may be able to find the right person on LinkedIn. Perhaps one of your colleagues or contacts may know who the appropriate person might be. You can also call the office of the unknown person you are writing and ask the receptionist for their name by explaining your reason for calling. For example:  Ã¢€œI am applying for a job with your company. Can you please tell me the name of your Hiring Manager so that I know to whom to  address my cover letter?” It doesn’t take much extra time to make the attempt to find a name, and the sentiment it conveys is worth it. Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you just can’t find a name to address your letter to. In that case, you have a variety of choices, all of which are professional and appropriate. The more information you have about where you are sending the letter, the better (for example, to the human resources department of the company, or to the manager of the department related to your inquiry). This way you can make a more targeted choice when selecting your greeting. When you have a name but are unsure of the gender of the person you are writing to, it is acceptable to leave out the honorific, and use the first and last names alone. For example: Dear Robin Miller. Tips for Writing and Sending a Letter After your greeting, you would begin your first paragraph, which is usually an introduction that lets the reader know who you are and what you are writing about. If you have a mutual acquaintance who referred you to the reader, you should  mention them at this time. The body of your letter normally consists of a paragraph or two of text. Here you can elaborate on the theme of your letter and provide supporting details to the subject. You’ll want to keep it concise, and pertinent to the person and the topic. Be thorough but don’t repeat yourself or go on and on about unimportant details. Next, you’ll need to sum up your letter. Your summary should include a thank you to the person for his or her time and consideration. If you plan to follow up later, you can also provide the details of when and how you will contact him or her. Finish your  professional letter with a closing,  such as “Sincerely”  or “Regards.” If you plan on sending the letter by postal service, your signature should be followed by your typed name. If you’re sending an email, your typed name should be followed by your contact information, which you can type in manually or have it done automatically for you. Heres  how to set up an automatic email signature.

Heres how to describe what you do when your relatives ask you this Thanksgiving

Here's how to describe what you do when your relatives ask you this Thanksgiving Here's how to describe what you do when your relatives ask you this Thanksgiving Ahhh, Thanksgiving. It’s a time for turkey, stuffing - and loads of questions from family about what you’re actually doing with your life now, in between bites of all the fixings. But whether you’re a recent graduate or are gearing up for a big career change, queries like this can be especially challenging to handle on the spot.Use these these tips when it’s your turn to explain what you do at the dinner table.Don’t beat around the bushWriting at  Monster,   career expert Vicki Salemi advises people to “be blunt.Ӊ€œAround the dinner table, proclaim, ‘I realize some of you have no idea what I do. And that’s okay, I probably haven’t taken time to fully explain it. In case you’re wondering, I work in the accounting department for a startup that creates apps for foodies.’ … Sure, it may not feel like the most organic conversation you’ve ever had but, at least one of your relatives is bound to be grateful. (You’ve saved them from asking the question that the y probably hate as much as you do.),” Salemi writes.Lay off the jargon, pleaseIt’s best to leave out all the corporate speak while under the watchful gazes of your closest relatives and friends, who have likely pursued different paths.Writer and marketer Rikki Rogers writes about how to tell “your grandparents or an elderly relative” about what you do in The Muse.“When you’re speaking to folks who have been out of the workforce for a while, it’s important to avoid jargon and simplify your everyday responsibilities,” Robers writes. “Instead of focusing on your day-to-day tasks, explain the end result of your hard work. For example, a UI designer might say, ‘I make websites more organized so it’s easier for people to find what they need.’ Highlight how your job contributes to the organization’s overall mission, emphasize long-term stability, and downplay technical skills (to avoid becoming the ad hoc help desk).”Put the ‘pain points’ in contextAuthor an d speaker Maria Ross writes in HuffPost that you should “describe the pain points you remove” during this discussion.“Everything we do is designed to increase pleasure or decrease pain. So instead of leading with benefits as stated above, you could share what pain your work takes away. Based on your audience, you’ll have to decide which way is more compelling for people,” Ross writes. One of the sample lines Ross provided was, “‘I coach corporate teams on how to end communication snafus, power grabs and bureaucratic red tape so they can be productive, motivated and energized at work.’”When things go off the rails, bridge the gapEveryone has their own definition of success. But with the inevitability of having a complicated position - or one that didn’t exist a decade ago - you’re bound to lose someone during your explanation. After mentioning that you shouldn’t “misinterpret someone’s confusion about what you to do for a living with disapproval,” Melody J. Wilding, writes in a  Forbes  article about how to answer a question about the idea that you should be raking in more cash. She says to think about the idea that they may really mean well.“Then carefully respond, acknowledging and empathizing, while standing up for a lifestyle you’ve chosen,” she writes. “An example of this would be, ‘Entrepreneurship comes with a lot of risks, and I certainly understand why that might be scary to you.’ You could go on to explain how you’ve accounted for financial uncertainties or even get vulnerable about your hopes, dreams and fears.”

Grandma chic dressing is very trendy in fashion right now

Grandma chic dressing is very trendy in fashion right now Grandma chic dressing is very trendy in fashion right now We get a lot of things from our grandmothers. Wisdom, love and apparently fashion tips. The baboushka which is a knotted headscarf has come to be closely associated with grandmother types, especially for when they walk in the rain is now the new “it” fashion accessory according to Vogue. Now headscarves have always been glamorous. Jackie Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn were big fans when they wanted to go incognito (except it had the opposite effect actually as it made them look more enigmatic.) But the baboushka is worn in a slightly less sophisticated  but more practical way (probably to protect your grandmother’s hair from the three drops of rain she thinks she felt.)Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! This look has been spotted on such fashion icons as Kendall Jenner, Chloe Sevigny and rapper A$AP Rocky. Sevigny, always on the cutting edge of fashion, even went so far as t o pair her baboushka with a grandma-chic jacket by Simone Rocha.   Designers are also embracing the look including Gucci and Balenciaga.Grandmas gone wildBut the grandma style isn’t just happening with small accessories. Dressing like a grandma is a super trend in fashion right now. According to Who What Wear, “Grandma dressing  is the trend that keeps on trending. What started with the rise of ladylike bags and silk scarves has quickly escalated to oversize ruffled collars, lace tights, and cozy cardigans. Essentially, when it comes to this way of dressing, if it looks like it could have come from the depths of your grandmother’s closet, put it on.” Grandma heels (which good news, are at a sensible height) are also quite popular right now. Kate Middleton was even seen in a pair.  So grab your warmest cardigan, some sensible shoes and complain about “Kids today!”You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

3 Common Job Scams on LinkedIn to Avoid

3 Common Job Scams on LinkedIn to Avoid 3 Common Job Scams on LinkedIn to Avoid Here are three common job scams on LinkedIn and how to avoid them. The African Prince Job Scam If you’ve ever gotten an email at 3:00 a.m. urging you to help an African prince transfer his life savings into your bank account, you’re not alone. And now, the same scammers are targeting professionals on LinkedIn with fake personas like doctors living in Dubai who promise that if you only help them out, theyll share a huge amount of money with you. Many people have fallen victim to this type of scam, which operates on people’s trust and the promise of quick, easy money. Once you divulge your bank info, the scammers will swoop down and withdraw every single cent from your account. What you should do: If you receive these emails, it’s best to just ignore them or send them directly to your spam folder. If you receive the message through LinkedIns mail system, you can flag it as an inappropriate contact. If you engage with the person sending it, they’ll continue corresponding with you and it can be tricky to get them to leave you alone. If you want, you can always report the job scam to your local Better Business Bureau. And after all, doesn’t this African prince have friends with whom he can trust his fortune? The Work for Free Job Scam You’ve primed your LinkedIn profile to show that you’re looking for work. Out of the blue, a company contacts you through LinkedIn to extend a job interview to you based on your profile and qualifications. You go through the entire job process and are hired. You’re not asked for your bank account info, nor are there other signs that the job might be a scam. You work for a few weeks in your freelance job, but when it comes time to receive your paycheck, you get bupkis in return. This happened to Irene, a job seeker who had already been working from home for a legitimate company for years. She told us, The sales manager contacted me through my LinkedIn profile and the owner interviewed and hired me. It was all outbound calling. I worked for them for three weeks and two days, and out of the blue got a phone call they decided to ‘go in a different direction’ and said they would send my paycheck. It never arrived. “The sales manager contacted me through my LinkedIn profile and the owner interviewed and hired me. It was all outbound calling. It’s important to note that not all job scams mean that you’ll fork over your hard-earned money. Sometimes the scam comes in the form of actually working for free (unbeknownst to you), and then the company will disappear or discontinue your employment as a way to avoid paying you. Thing is, as an independent contractor, you have very limited, if any, rights. In the end it can cost you more to sue the company than what is owed to you. What you should do: As with any potential job offer, you should do your due diligence ahead of time. Check out the company online by visiting the Better Business Bureau to get a sense if it’s legit or not. You can even Google the company’s name along with the words “rip-off” or “scam” to see what comes up. Look for other employees on LinkedIn to see if their profiles are real or fake. From there, you should have a good sense if this is a real job opportunity or not. And NEVER let a company rush you into making a rash decision. Scammers count on desperate job seekers not thinking things through, so be sure to walk away if youre ever pressured into accepting a job on the spot without being able to research the company. Scam Messages in LinkedIn Groups You share your thoughts, ideas, and best how-to-find-a-job tips with your fellow job seekers in LinkedIn groups. Unfortunately, you may have more foes than friends in your LinkedIn circles. Job scammers have started infiltrating job groups pretending to be fellow job seekers who are offering helpful advice and job leads to unsuspecting users. There are a few ways to spot the scammers. Be wary of anyone with a profile that doesn’t have a photo or has only a handful of connections. If they are offering a lead to a job that seems too good to be true (e.g., “Earn $5,000 with simple mouse clicks!”), it almost always is. That’s why it’s a safer bet to go with a reputable job search board such as, where the jobs are hand-screened to ensure that they are 100 percent legitimate and scam-free. What you should do: Tough times can make even the savviest job seeker desperate. But don’t let your desperation blind you from the warning signs of a job scam.
